The 9 Best Information Sources on the Web
Every so often I like to go looking around and find the absolute best and most useful information sources available on the Internet. Since the Internet is in a state of constant change it stand to figure that information sources will be as well. Below, you will find MY list of the best information sources available today.
1) Google- Again, Google is one of the finest sources available and in my opinion it will continue to be. They seem to never stop innovating and have some top notch search tools. Be sure to check out their other search products like Maps, Movies, Books and Airline Info. Google is just not a little search box in the middle of a web page they have fantastic Advanced Tools and be sure to check out Google Labs for even more fantastic products.
2) Crimcheck.com- Ok, I have to toot our own horn for a second. Crimcheck.com has some of the finest sources of information available FOR FREE. Check out our free resources page and you can get info on a contractor with the free contractor license lookup, run your own motor vehicle report, get free public records and conduct your own background check, and don’t forget to check out our special section with useful tips and articles.
3) Pipl- Pipl.com bills itself as the most comprehensive people search on the web. I am not sure about that but they certainly do a great job when searching for people. They claim to be able to scour the “deep web” for more information than a regular search engine can get. This seems to work pretty well because I have tried it and have had very good results.
4) Zaba Search- I was sort of reluctant to include Zaba Search on this list because they mainly turned into a shill for Intellius. Intellius is a paid service and I didn’t want to put any paid services on this list. The bottom line though is this, Zaba still provides some very useful information for free, if you want to get into any type of detail though it will cost you.
5) USA.gov- A useful government site? I know it’s hard to believe but with USA.gov. You can get info about government grants, housing, health, jobs or just about any government program. Give it a look there are some great resources.
6) OnlineNewspapers.Com- This is a great concept and website. Their tagline is “Thousands of newspapers at your fingertips”. You can find find newspapers from all over the world.
7) DomainTools- Have you ever wanted to find out who owned a website? Well now you can, just go to Domain tools and put the name of the website in the search box and it will return the name of the owner, the contact information, and tons of other useful information. You can also do a reverse IP search.
Kayak- Kayak is the ultimate travel search site. It can search over 140 travel sites and find you the cheapest fares available. You can filter the results any way you like to compare prices, etc. I have used Kayak in the past and have saved quite a bit of money. I know this isn’t exactly an information site like the ones listed above but it is very useful and can come in handy in just about any business.
9) Ask a Librarian- Who knows more than a librarian? NO ONE, that’s who! This site is the Library of Congress website. Their primary mission is to provide information to the members of The United States Congress, but they also serve the general public when they have time. You can submit a question via an email form or fax them. Ask them questions about business, science, history, international matters or even movies!
