How long does a background check take?

That depends on the components ordered and what type of check you are doing. For employment purposes a background check can take anywhere from 24 hours to 1 week. Our company generally gets a background check request back to the client within 48 to 72 hours. Preventing Business to Business Fraud with a Due Diligence Check

Monday, August 27th, 2007

A due diligence check is an excellent tool to use before entering into a business relationship with another individual or business.  A due diligence check is a comprehensive check used most often for verifying the qualifications of an executive or a company with whom you are considering entering into a business relationship or agreement with.  Due diligence checks can also be used for medical personnel, pilots, teachers, engineers and other professional who require professional credentials or licensing in order to perform their job.  Without the proper professional licensing, an individual or business is not qualified to participate in the transaction or do business.  Before entering into any business transaction or any other business relationship, it is essential to protect yourself from fraud by conducting a thorough due diligence check of all involved parties.

Utilizing a due diligence search is the most efficient, convenient and effective way to prevent business to business fraud.  One of the leading causes of business to business fraud is doing business with someone who is not who they say they are.  This risk can easily be reduced by making a due diligence check a regular part of your pre-employment and pre-contractual repertoire.  A typical due diligence check involves surveying data from numerous federal and state databases and regulators pertaining to professional licensing and registration.  Further, a due diligence check will also provide a comprehensive background check, including a multiple jurisdiction and federal criminal background search, civil litigation search, search of property and business ownership, and personal and professional reference verifications.  The result is that you will have a comprehensive understanding of the individual or business’ background before entering into a relationship or transaction with them.  This information will give you the confidence you need to make sound business and hiring decisions.

Performing a due diligence check is both simple and efficient.  One of the most convenient ways to run a due diligence check is to utilize the services of a professional background check company.  By using a professional background check company, you will have access to their due diligence search engine and the multiple databases it is capable of searching.  Prior to agreeing to a business relationship, you simply log onto the professional background check website or other computer program and enter such identity verification information as the individual’s name, Social Security number, address, date of birth, drivers’ license and telephone number.  To perform a due diligence check of another business, simply enter the company’s name, tax identification number, address and telephone number.  Once this information is entered, the due diligence check will automatically search the relevant databases, comparing the entered information with the data found in the databases.  The results will show you whether there are any discrepancies with the individual or business that may prevent you from wanting to conduct business with them.  If the due diligence check returns any information that calls into questions the individual or business’ qualifications, credentials or honesty, then you should think twice about doing business with them or risk being a victim of fraud.

Giving Away The Store!

Monday, July 2nd, 2007

In many of my recent articles I have been explaining how to conduct your own background checks for free. I have received more than a few emails from people in the employment screening and investigative industry concerned that I was giving away too much information and that people may not need to use our (employment screening) services if they can just go and do their own background checks. I look at it like this. If someone wants to conduct their own background checks, fine let them. The Internet is all about the free exchange of ideas.

Yes, I am a capitalist along with millions of others in The United States. The company I work for is an expert in the background check industry. We have been doing this for years and years. We have great clients, I don’t think they are going anywhere soon. We provide a great product at a great price. I truly have faith that once someone tries our services and sees how hassle free it is they will pay the little bit extra and get a professionally done background check that is not only FCRA compliant but lowers there liability.

How To Conduct Your Own Free Background Check Part I

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

Ok, many people on the Internet search for "free background checks". Most places that offer free background checks make you pay at some point. I am going to explain how you can do a check for free (for the most part) on yourself or someone else.

Let’s clear the air here, if you are going to be running a background check then please follow all state and federal laws pertaining to them. For example if you are conducting the check for employment purposes then please follow the guidelines of the FCRA. Do not take this lightly as you can get into a whole heap of trouble.

Let’s start with the criminal record check. The best way to do this, as I have said before, is to go through the county courts where the person has lived. If you have the persons last address then check that county and the surrounding counties in that area I will give an example. Let’s say I want to conduct a criminal record check on my daughters new boyfriend and I know that he is from Cleveland, Ohio. I went to http://www.ask.com/ and typed in Ohio County Maps. I happen to know that Cleveland, Ohio is located in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Ask.com gave me a good county map of Ohio and from there I can determine the closest counties around Cuyahoga. Check out a copy of the map here http://www.dot.state.oh.us/map1/cntymap.asp .

The reason I want the closest counties to Cuyahoga is because I am going to be checking them for criminal records on our subject as well. Why, you ask? Well because most people that commit crimes tend to do so within their comfort zone, meaning within a certain distance of their house.

So from our example we can see that Lake, Geauga, Summit, Medina and Lorain Counties all surround our target county.

Next we need to figure out what court house we are either going to call or check online. Most courthouses are online these days and you can find a good list of them here http://www.crimcheck.com/freerecords.htm .

Ok, I now have My subjects name, the county he lives in and the surrounding counties of the county he lives in and a list to find the court houses in those counties. Now we need to find out if he has a criminal record. In this instance I used the name Michael Smith. Click the image at the top of this post for the example. As you can see the results all have addresses by them, that is one way to determine that you have the right subject.

Now you can go to all of the other counties on your list and do the same thing. Warning: As you can see from our example there is more than one Michael Smith. Make sure that you have the right subject before you start making accusations or using the results as evidence.

You can even go one step further and check for misdemeanors within the city courts of the counties that your are checking. I would normally just check the city where the subject lives and the county seats of the surrounding counties. If you have comments or questions please feel free to post them here.

I will be covering motor vehicle records and driving records in my next article so stay tuned!

City to privatize background checks
City officials say the Missouri State Highway Patrol often takes too long to process criminal background checks on applicants for Columbia business licenses and will ask a private company to conduct the investigations.
Janice Finley, who oversees business licensing for the city’s finance department, said some applicants have waited up to six weeks for a finalized background check state police say only takes 30 minutes to an hour to conduct.
“That’s not a very acceptable practice,” Finley said.

Trucking firms are revved up over costly background checks
The trucking industry, already facing a shortage of drivers who feel burdened by costly mandated criminal background checks, could take another hit when the Department of Homeland Security rolls out a new program requiring drivers to undergo yet another background check.
Drivers going to and from ports would have to undergo a fingerprint-based background screening and pay $149 for an I.D. card under a new security proposal by homeland security.
