Sex Offenders Applying to Become Coaches
Sex offenders or drug violators, these don’t sound like the people you want to be coaching your son or daughter.
Even with the city requiring all possibly coaches to clear a background check, the requirement has not stopped pedophiles, scam arrests or even drug abusers from applying.
This month 634 applied to volunteer their time for the city’s little league program. Nearly 16-percent failed.
While most fail because of DUI’s, family violence or drug charges. This month two applicants stood out. “We had a couple that came back this month that were sex offenders that cant coach, ” said Paula Powell, spokesperson for the city recreation department.
The background checks are nationwide, which Powell said comes as a surprise to some who fail.
She also said some people have gone so far as to put down the wrong social security number or false names to try and pass the checks. But so far, it hasn’t worked.
