Schools Need Better Background Checks
Yesterday I wrote about the importance of screening our teachers. What about the rest of the staff that we have around our children? A story out of Columbus, Ohio called Criminals In Schools Is very disturbing.
Channel 10 news found more than 20 custodians and food service workers with disqualifying criminal records. At least one of those records involved gross sexual imposition with a child. Some of the other charges included weapons charges, drugs and one charge of helping a person break out of jail. The reason many of these charges were never found is because the perpetrators committed these crimes after they were hires. So what do you think? Is it a good idea to have ongoing background checks as a term of someones employment? How do you balance privacy against safety?
