Conducting background checks on temps

Digging into the background of a potential employee is becoming more prevalent in today’s working world. Knowing who you are hiring can save your business time, money and aggravation if an applicant is not as good a choice as they might appear. The sad truth is that there are many people who lie or exaggerate on job applications and during interviews. Pre-employment background checks are becoming increasingly popular even when hiring temporary employees.

If you are a hiring manager, human resource manager or CEO of a company, you know that you must be careful not to cross any lines when interviewing and hiring individuals. You cannot perform any type of background check without the permission of the applicant. There are often permission forms that an applicant must sign for information to be released. There are other laws governing what information you can and cannot collect on a potential employee. Consult your legal department to learn about background check laws and regulations within your state.

Your state laws and the amount of money you wish to spend will dictate the type of information you can gather about an applicant. In some cases, you can access their credit report. You might also be able to gather information if a person has a criminal record. Background checks are essential when hiring for schools, continuing care communities as well as hospitals and other healthcare facilities.

Performing a background check for an individual who you want to hire is sometimes as simple as requesting a criminal background check. In many instances, you will require an employee to pay for this check since it is relatively inexpensive. If you receive permission from an applicant and have a special account established, you can also gather information from an individual’s credit report. There are professionals that require specific background checks, acts and clearances in accordance with the always. A prime example is when hiring teachers.

There are many background check companies that an employer can use as well. These services might be used at times for high paying, high power jobs. Again, you will have to make certain that you receive permission to perform the background check according to your state’s laws. Another consideration is how much you want to spend to perform a background check.

You can perform a background check of your own. If you are hiring a temporary employee, it is still essential to follow up with their references. You will also want to call some of their previous employers to verify their work history. Often, you will be able to call to verify a person’s educational history as well. These methods will take some time but will not cost your company any money.

Some companies do not take the time to check up on temporary employees. However, doing so can be costly if you hire the wrong employee. It is also important to remember that temporary employees can become permanent employees. Take some time to verify information an applicant has provided you on their application and their interview. You want to hire someone who is safe, honest and has a positive work history.
