Background checks have become such a common item in the employment world, but now they are becoming just as important when attempting to conduct business. In this article, the county wants any carnival worker to have a background check prior to working the local county fair. I think it is a great practice, especially since many children and teens will be attending this function without parental supervision.
The Union County prosecutor wants police to run background checks on all the carnival workers who roll into town for the Union County Fair this month. Read more…

While it is a good practice to utilize the state system to conduct a background check, what does the agency plan to do if the applicant is new to the state of Alabama? The state system does not include records from any other states. It also contains arrest records, which in it of themselves can cause an employer issues with the Fair Credit Reporting Act. I think that many employers miss this issue too when they rely simply on the state system, instead of contracting a third party background screening company to conduct a true county search based upon the residential history of the applicant. Since the September 11th bombings the FBI has made some surprising discoveries. Hundreds of terrorist suspects and insurgents that have been rounded up in Afghanistan, Iraq and Africa have criminal records here in the United States.
