Dyersville bans sex offenders from city limits
DYERSVILLE — Sex offenders have been banned from living in this northeastern Iowa city.The City Council on Monday approved the state’s strictest law on sex offender residency, the latest in a flurry of similar local ordinances passed across Iowa that has drawn both criticism and praise. The measure passed 4-1, the lone dissenting vote cast by councilwoman Eileen Huberty, who asked the council whether it would also ban those convicted of other crimes, specifically methamphetamine users. Digging up records: Background checks in the future of school employees
A new unfunded mandate will cost Cadillac Area Public Schools roughly $30,000 over the next two years. The situation that CAPS finds itself in is not unique or a punishment. Every district in the state will have to deal with a similar situation. Beginning Jan. 1, school districts will need to start doing background checks and will need to have all current employee checks completed by 2008. It also includes fingerprinting. Read More
