Va. Panel Rejects E-Dating Background Checks

A Virginia General Assembly committee on Monday rejected a bill that would have required online dating companies to display prominent messages on their Web sites and e-mails stating whether they conduct criminal background checks on their users.

Under the proposal, online dating services would have been required to conduct background checks to determine whether users have been convicted of a felony. If a service chose not to conduct the checks, it would have been required to disclose that in at least 12-point type on its Web pages and e-mails. Read More

Hazmat transporters now must have fingerprints, background checks

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Commercial truck drivers who transport hazardous material now must have their fingerprints taken and their background checked under provisions of the federal Patriot Act. The new requirement took effect Monday for drivers seeking a new application to haul hazardous material, such as flammable solids, gases or radioactive materials, Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land said. Renewed hazardous material endorsements will require fingerprint and background checks beginning May 31. Read More
